Danish Government Plans to Issue Public Tenders for 9 GW of New Offshore Wind Projects in 2023

Published on 22nd February 2023

The Danish government is planning to issue public tenders for 9 GW of offshore wind projects in 2023. The announcement has been made by Lars Aagaard, Minister of Climate, Energy, and Utilities.

The tenders will include Energiø Bornholm, Hesselø, and an additional 5 GW of offshore wind projects, paving the way for a significant increase in Danish offshore wind power by 2030.

The government is also considering the possibility of resuming the review of energy project applications that had been halted due to concerns about potential violations of the European Union's state aid regulations. As per the ministry,

Aagaard further said, "The government will spend the next few weeks leading up to negotiations investigating whether we should give installers more freedom to build as much offshore wind as possible in the areas we have already designated. This could potentially mean that there will be significantly more offshore wind than the agreed 9 GW."

Along with the public tender process, the country has an "open door scheme" that allows energy firms to submit unsolicited applications for the installation of renewable energy projects.

The 9 GW of offshore wind projects will be capable of producing enough green electricity to cover the annual consumption of more than nine million Danish and European households. The Ministry stated that this move aligns with Denmark's goal to achieve a fivefold increase in offshore wind capacity by 2030, as the country aims to become a leader in sustainable energy.
