Construction of the World's Largest Green Hydrogen Plant in Inner Mongolia Starts

Published on 20th February 2023

Sinopec, the Chinese state-owned petroleum and petrochemical enterprise, recently started the construction of its first green hydrogen demonstration project in Inner Mongolia - the Ordos City Scenery Integration Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project.

The project harnesses the abundant solar and wind energy resources in the region to generate electricity, which is then used to produce green hydrogen. The facility is expected to produce 30,000 tons of green hydrogen and 240,000 tons of green oxygen annually. The green hydrogen will be used to reduce carbon emissions at the nearby Zhongtian Co-creation Ordos Coal Deep Processing Demonstration Project.

Built at a total investment of the project is about USD 848.21 million (5.7 billion yuan), the project is believed to be the largest green hydrogen coupling coal chemical project in the world. Its launch has expanded China's green hydrogen production capacity and will promote the development of the country's green hydrogen industrial chain.

The initiative will employ proton membrane electrolysis, a water-based method for producing hydrogen that is entirely pollution-free. Currently, water electrolysis is the most widely used technique for manufacturing green hydrogen.

Additionally, it will advance the transformation and upgrading of China's energy industry, in line with the country's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and adopting carbon neutrality for sustainable development.

Net zero, or carbon neutrality, is achieved when emissions are offset by deploying facilities to capture and store the same amount from the atmosphere. Sinopec Engineering is developing carbon capture technology to meet the group’s goal to have a demonstration plant operating by 2025.

The launch of this project marks a significant milestone for Sinopec and the green hydrogen industry in China, as the country aims to become a leader in the global green energy transition.
