Global Electric Insulators Market - Growth, Trends, and Forecast (Outlook to 2028)

Updated on 26th May 2023 | Market Research Reports | Q2 2023 | Report ID: BR0292

About the Report

The growth of the global electric insulator market is being driven by factors such as increased power generating capacity, which would necessitate the upgrading of transmission and distribution (T&D) infrastructure, increasing expenditures in the renovation of old grid infrastructure, as well as legislative initiatives aimed at expanding dependable grid infrastructure.

Furthermore, rising demand for electricity & investments in smart grid projects for long-distance transmission, increasing grid integration of renewable energy (predominantly solar energy and Wind Energy), and economies recovering from pandemics are driving demand for the global Electric Insulator market.

However, the development of alternative power infrastructure, such as subterranean (Underground) electricity transmission, and rising raw material costs are impeding the growth of the electric insulators industry.

An insulator is a device that prevents energy from being transferred from one medium to another. Insulators are widely used in electrical applications, as well as transmission and distribution. Silicone rubber is the most common polymeric insulating Material used in high-voltage equipment.

Glass Insulator, Ceramic Insulator/porcelain Insulator, and composite/polymer insulators are used for Electricity transmission (i.e., predominantly in transformers and power distribution lines). In functioning Pin insulator, Post insulator, Suspension insulator, Strain insulator, and Shackle Insulator are the most common insulator kinds.

Glass insulators are often made at high temperatures by combining several ingredients, such as lime and quartz powder, and then cooling rapidly in the mould. Porcelain insulators are comprised of clay, quartz or alumina, and feldspar, and are coated with a smooth glaze to keep water out. Composite insulators are made up of at least two insulating materials, one of which serves as an electrical conductor and the other as a mechanical conductor.

Electric insulators have favourable features such as extremely high resistance, limited thermal expansion, and tightly controlled valence electrons inside the dielectric Material, allowing them to resist electron flow and high dielectric strength. Insulators constructed of alumina-rich porcelain are employed when great mechanical strength is required. The dielectric strength of porcelain is around 40-100 kV/cm. Glass has greater dielectric strength (between 500 kV/cm and 1000 kV/cm). Still, it draws condensation, and it is difficult to cast the thick irregular forms required for insulators without internal stresses.

The Composite Insulators Market is expected have the highest growth among other types of insulators. Lightweight, enhanced transmission line aesthetics, reduced bullet damage, excellent shock resistance, and simplicity of installation are all advantages of composite insulators. Composite insulators are more suited than traditional porcelain insulators because of these benefits.

Key Opportunities:

  • The expansion of electricity T&D in rural regions in underdeveloped and developing countries.
  • The rise in smart grid initiatives in major economies and the integration of renewable energy into such grids.
  • The rise in demand for electric vehicles (EV) necessitates the construction of EV charging infrastructure.

The Global pandemic has significantly impacted the global electric insulators industry, particularly in regions of key manufacturing and raw material suppliers. There is a decrease in output due to increasing raw material prices and a shortage of appropriate components for the manufacturing process. The electric insulators industry is back on track with the ease of lockdowns in Q2 of 2021.

Due to fast urbanization, growing population, expanding grid networks, and increasing EV vehicle usage and EV charging infrastructure, Asia Pacific is anticipated to have the greatest share of the electric insulator market over the forecast period.

The following are few Grid development plans backed by financial institutions and government organisations that will boost the growth rate of the electric insulators market:

  • The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Union will contribute EUR 330 million (about USD 398 million) to a project that would connect hydroelectric power facilities in Guinea and Mali, bringing clean and cheap electricity to millions of people in West Africa.
  • The African Development Bank has offered USD 530 million to help fund the building of a 343-kilometer, 400-kV central-south transmission line in Angola, which would connect the country's north and south transmission grids.
  • Minister of Natural Resources, Canada, Seamus O'Regan Jr. announced a USD 964 million initiative on June 2nd, 2021, to promote smart renewable energy and grid modernization projects that would reduce emissions by investing in clean energy technologies like wind, solar, storage, hydro, geothermal, and tidal.

Recent Developments:

  • In March 2021, Siemens Energy has been awarded a contract by the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company to build grid stabilization stations in Sudan, which will stabilize the grid and ensure a reliable flow of power from Egypt to Sudan. This deal will be Sudan's first grid-scale stabilization.
  • Hitachi ABB Power Grids in India has successfully commissioned one of India's longest ultra-high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission links for Power Grid Corporation of India Limited. The 1,800-kilometer-long, 800-kilovolt (kV), 6,000-megawatt (MW) link connects Raigarh in Central India to Pugalur in Tamil Nadu's southern state. It has the ability to satisfy the power demands of more than 80 million people.
