Masdar and Uzbekistan Government to develop landmark 500 MW wind project

Published on 10th June 2020

The Ministry of Investments and Foreign Trade of the Republic of Uzbekistan and JSC National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan has awarded Masdar a 500 MW utility-scale wind farm project. Masdar Clean Energy, based in Abu Dhabi, is a leading developer and operator of utility-scale renewable energy projects, community grid projects, and energy services consultancy.

As part of the deal, the company will design, finance, build and operate the project, and the commercial operation will begin in 2024. The project, which will be located in the Zarafshon district of the Navoi Region, comes as part of Uzbekistan’s long-term renewable energy ambitions to develop 5 GW of renewable energy by 2030.

A power purchase agreement (PPA) with JSC National Electric Grid of Uzbekistan has been signed together with the investment contract. The wind farm will produce 1.9 GWh of electricity per year to cover the consumption of 500,000 homes. The construction will begin by the end of this year and will be carried out in phases, with the first power generation from up to 250 MW of the overall capacity expected to go online in the middle of 2022.

Masdar’s Al Ramahi commented: “Masdar is proud to be collaborating with the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan on our second utility-scale clean energy project in the country. The 500MW wind farm supports Uzbekistan’s long-term renewable energy ambitions and its strong commitment to modernize its power sector and invest in energy security. As a global leader in the development of utility-scale wind power, Masdar is committed to advancing clean-tech innovation regionally and internationally by deploying the latest technologies at scale and enhancing their commercial viability.”

Previously, Masdar signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) and Government Support Agreement (GSA) with the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan in November 2019 to design, finance, build and operate the country’s first public-private partnership (PPP) solar power plant. Masdar won the solar project after tendering the lowest tariff of 2.679 US cents per kilowatt-hour in the program’s competitive auction to develop the 100 MW utility-scale PV solar plant, which will be located in the Navoi region. The power generating capacity of the renewable energy projects in which Masdar is a partner total more than 5GW.

Recently, on March 8th, 2020, the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan has signed three strategic agreements with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power* to boost the power generation capacity and technical competence of the nation.
